When you are out driving around, you may see a lot of Arborvitae shrubs covered in burlap. The burlap does help to prevent wind damage during the winter but it also makes it harder for the deer to eat the branches of the Arborvitae. If you have a hedge of Arborvitae and you do not wrap them in burlap, you will probably find that the deer will do major damage to the plants. You may say to yourself that you never see deer in your yard yet, in many cases, the deer are out feeding well after your bedtime.
Many of the balsam wreaths that you buy in stores are made in Canada. Canada has had problems with snow and ice storms. When this happens, it makes it virtually impossible for people to get out and cut the balsam boughs that are needed to make the wreaths. Larger size wreaths are virtually impossible to get at this time of the season. Even the smaller size wreaths are selling out fast. If you plan on buying a balsam wreath, I would advise you to do so this week.
You may have people on your holiday shopping list who do a lot of gardening. Gloves are something every gardener needs yet for some reason, many people will use the same ratty pair year after year. Many gloves now come in sizes as opposed to the “ one size fits most” styles of a few years ago. You can get that gardener on your list a new pair of gloves. All gardeners need hand tools. Trowels, pruners, cultivators, loping shears and other tools wear out and need to be replaced. Any of these items are a good choice for any gardener. A good hat has become a necessity for all people who are out in the sun. The number of cases of skin cancers is on the rise. A wide brimmed hat may not be the most fashionable thing to wear outside but it has become a necessity if you are going to be gardening.
