Watering Guides
Proper watering is the most important factor in establishing new trees and shrubs. Following the guidelines below will give your plants the best chance to thrive and develop strong root systems.
General Watering Principles
- Water during and after planting
- Check unplanted material daily for moisture
- Never rely on rainfall or lawn irrigation
- Avoid overhead watering, which can cause foliage issues
- Water deeply, not frequently
- Lay a hose in the basin around the plant
- Run water at a slow trickle (size of your little finger)
- Water for 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on root ball size
- Always water the root ball and surrounding soil
- Allow soil to dry 1–2 inches between waterings
Water more often during:
- Hot days
- Windy conditions
- Sunny, dry stretches
Water less during:
- Cool, cloudy periods
- After deep watering days
- Continue watering until the ground freezes
- Resume watering as soon as the snow melts
- Winter dryness can harm new plants
- Plants require consistent watering for:
- 1–5 years, depending on size
- After year one, water less frequently but for the same duration
As plants mature, begin watering the drip line to encourage outward root growth.
- We strongly suggest:
- Root Stimulator (3 applications, one week apart)
- Start-N-Grow or Bio-Tone fertilizer for stress-free establishment
